Salt-Rimmed Margarita on the Rocks

The purist margarita: blanco tequila, fresh lime and orange liqueur shaken hard and poured over ice in a glass with a crunchy salt rim. It is tart, clean and bright, with just enough sweetness to balance the lime. Skip the bottled mix, because fresh juice makes all the difference.

Method 5 steps

  1. Spread the salt on a small plate, run the lime wedge around the outside rim of a rocks glass and roll the rim in the salt.

  2. Fill the glass with fresh ice.

  3. Add the tequila, lime juice, orange liqueur and agave syrup to a shaker with the remaining ice.

  4. Shake hard for 12 to 15 seconds, until the shaker is frosty cold.

  5. Strain into the prepared glass, cut a slit in the lime wheel and perch it on the rim. Serve immediately.
