Heart-Poured Cafe Latte

A double shot of espresso topped with sweet, glossy steamed milk and finished with a clean heart on top. The double-walled glass shows off the rich crema layer beneath the foam and keeps the coffee warm. Mastering the heart pour is the first step toward cafe-level latte art at home.

Method 7 steps

  1. Warm a double-walled glass cup with hot water, then empty and dry it.

  2. Tamp the ground coffee evenly and pull a double shot of about 2 ounces in 25 to 30 seconds straight into the cup. Stir in the vanilla syrup if using.

  3. Purge the steam wand, then place its tip just below the surface of the cold milk and stretch for 3 to 5 seconds, hearing a gentle tearing sound.

  4. Sink the wand slightly to spin the milk into a whirlpool and heat to 140 to 150 F, when the jug is just too hot to hold.

  5. Tap the jug firmly on the counter and swirl until the milk looks glossy like wet paint.

  6. Tilt the cup and pour from high into the center until half full, then bring the spout close to the surface and let a round white circle bloom.

  7. When the cup is nearly full, lift the jug and draw a quick thin line through the circle to shape the heart. Dust lightly with cocoa if you like.

Tap a step to mark it done.
