Solid granite gives this mortar the weight and rough interior needed to break down whole spices, garlic and herbs quickly. The unpolished bowl grips ingredients so they do not slide away, making it ideal for pesto, curry pastes, chimichurri and freshly cracked pepper. A thick pestle fits the hand comfortably and uses its own weight to do most of the work. The pale speckled grey stone looks good left out on the counter. Before first use, grind a little dry rice to season the surface. Rinse with warm water only, no soap, and let it air dry completely.
